What Do The Different Colors Of USB Ports Mean?

Jan 09, 2026

Many digital products have USB ports, and observant users may have noticed that there are various different USB port colors in recent years. While you might think it's just for aesthetics, different colors actually represent different performance capabilities.

Below, I'll briefly explain the meaning of these colors:

1. Black/White: Belonging to the USB 1.0/2.0 era, this is the most traditional speed, theoretically relatively slow, only about 60MB/s, and charging speed is also slow.

2. Dark Blue: Belonging to the USB 3.0 era, the theoretical maximum speed is 640MB/s, much faster than the previous generation.

3. Light Blue: Belonging to the USB 3.1 era, the theoretical maximum transfer speed is 1280MB/s.

4. Green: Represents support for Qualcomm QC fast charging technology, a less common type of port.

5. Yellow: A USB 2.0 port with limited transfer speed, but it supports charging even when the device is turned off.

6. Red: A USB 3.1 port with significantly increased transfer speed, still 1280MB/s, and also supports charging when the device is turned off.
